BIOGRAPHY
Etta Stevens Potter (she/her) is a Master of Arts student in the Department of Communication at the 91社区. Proudly raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada 鈥 located on Treaty One Territory and the National Homeland of the Red River M茅tis 鈥 she holds a four-year Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and Communication from the University of Winnipeg. She has also worked for several years at the University of Winnipeg as a teaching assistant and research assistant.
Drawing on critical theory, cultural and media studies, and digital rhetoric, Etta鈥檚 research explores how ideas take hold, circulate, and come to feel natural. She is particularly interested in how digital platforms, media, and popular culture shape which ideas become visible, persuasive, and accepted as common sense. Her work and research interests include right-wing discourse, environmental communication, religious disaffiliation, and the rhetorics of psychology and medicine, with a focus on how communication can reinforce or challenge existing forms of power.
Her recent scholarly work includes the article 鈥淢aybe They鈥檙e Born with It鈥 Maybe It鈥檚 Capitalism: Rethinking Neurodivergence Beyond Pathologization鈥 and her honours thesis, 鈥淪oaking in Common Sense: How LDS Tradwife Influencers Make Patriarchy Feel Natural, Beautiful, and Chosen.鈥
