BIOGRAPHY:
James 鈥淧aul鈥� Pope is a Professor of the Practice and Senior Fellow at the Intelligence
Studies Project at UT-Austin. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Clements Center for
National Security and the Strauss Center for International Security and Law. Pope
served 30 years in the CIA, retiring in 2016 as a member of the Senior Intelligence
Service in the Directorate of Operations. His roles included Chief of the Tradecraft
and Training Division, Chief of Station, Deputy Director of the Counter-terrorism
Center, and Deputy National Intelligence Officer for the Near East and South Asia.
Pope also led the U.S. delegation to NATO鈥檚 intelligence committee and coordinated
intelligence operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In addition to his CIA career, Pope served on the U.S. Army General Staff and commanded the only active firebase on the DMZ in Korea. He is a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Pope holds advanced degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and the United States Military Academy, West Point. He has been awarded multiple honors, including the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal and the National Intelligence Superior Service Medal.
