As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries, workplaces, and daily life, educators are grappling with an important question: Should higher education embrace, adapt to, or resist AI?
That question took center stage during the season-opening event of USF's Debate-A-Bull series on August 31, where faculty experts from across the university joined Provost Prasant Mohapatra for a lively discussion on AI's growing role in education and what it means for teaching, learning, and student success.
The panel featured John Licato from the Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing, Deepak Singh from the Judy Genshaft Honors College, and Stephanie Arthur from the College of Education. While panelists brought diverse perspectives and varying degrees of optimism and caution to the conversation, they agreed on one central point: artificial intelligence is no longer a future possibility. It is a present reality that higher education must address thoughtfully.
The conversation also highlighted the increasing importance of AI literacy. As employers across sectors begin to expect graduates to understand and use AI tools responsibly, universities face growing pressure to prepare students for a rapidly evolving workforce. Panelists emphasized that AI literacy extends beyond technical proficiency and includes understanding the ethical considerations, limitations, and potential consequences of these technologies.
At the same time, the discussion acknowledged legitimate concerns surrounding academic integrity, privacy, and overreliance on technology. Rather than viewing AI through the lens of adoption versus resistance, panelists encouraged a more nuanced approach focused on thoughtful adaptation. Faculty shared examples of how they are incorporating AI into teaching and learning in ways that strengthen educational outcomes while ensuring students continue to develop the foundational knowledge and judgment needed to evaluate AI-generated content critically.
The event ultimately underscored the vital role higher education plays in helping society navigate technological change. As AI continues to reshape industries and redefine how work is done, universities have a responsibility to prepare students not only to use these tools, but also to question them, improve them, and understand their broader impact on society.
