The city's historic district features antebellum mansions, centuries-old churches, and lush gardens, while its food scene showcases a mix of Gullah traditions and contemporary Southern cuisine. Charleston鈥檚 unique blend of old-world elegance and coastal hospitality makes it one of America鈥檚 most beloved destinations. Our location offers easy access to beautiful downtown historic Charleston, the old city market, and local beaches..
The South Carolina coast around Charleston is a classic mixed energy setting with short, beach-ridge barrier islands, large ebb tidal deltas, and expansive, marsh-filled lagoons. This is where Miles Hayes at the University of South Carolina coined the term, 鈥渄rumstick barrier island鈥, which attendees of Coastal Sediments 鈥77 were introduced to 50 years ago.
South Carolina is one of the most intensely studied coastlines. It exhibits the full spectrum of shoreline change and problems associated with development all in close proximity. Some islands, like Kiawah, are heathy and accreting via episodic sediment bypassing. Others are erosional and stabilized by revetments and groins.
Sea level rise is impacting low causeways and interior parts of the resort islands with increasing frequency, as predicted by 1980s models. Attendees of CS 鈥27 will have a chance to see how dynamic Charleston鈥檚 barrier islands have been and hear about advances in our understanding of this coast after decades of sand management.
