EUH 3575 - History of Imperial Russia, 1689-1917

A survey of social, political, economic, and cultural development in the Russian Empire
from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. Topics include the expansion and modernization
of the Empire, the culture of the Imperial court, peasant rebellions, social and legal
reforms, the role of the West, and the collapse of the Romanov dynasty.

A study of Soviet society under communism from the Revolution to the collapse of the
USSR. Topics include the origins and development of revolutionary socialism, the Bolshevik
seizure of power, Stalinism and the Great Terror, popular dissent and resistance,
the treatment and experience of ethnic minorities, Gorbachev and the dissolution of
the Soviet Union.
