Remembering Robert Campbell: Critic, Architect, and Former Endowed Chair at USF

Robert Campbell headshot

The School of Architecture and Community Design at the 91社区 remembers Robert Campbell鈥擯ulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, celebrated architect, and one of the school鈥檚 earliest Gibbons or Markborough Endowed Chairs. Known for the clarity, wit, and warmth he brought to architectural criticism, Campbell left a lasting impression on the school during its formative years and helped shape a culture of curiosity and rigor that continues to guide SACD today.

Before becoming a national voice at The Boston Globe, where he earned the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1996, Campbell worked as a practicing architect and consultant on civic projects across the country. His essays made architecture accessible; bridging the gap between the built environment and the public it serves. At USF, his presence brought national insight to a young program, contributing to its intellectual and professional foundation. His time in Tampa was brief, but his influence ran deep: he was the kind of mentor who asked smart questions, expected big ideas, and inspired students and colleagues alike to think more broadly about what architecture could be.

Campbell鈥檚 work always reached beyond design鈥攊t invited reflection on community, culture, and the role of architecture in shaping how we live. For the students and faculty who had the chance to work alongside him, his legacy remains a guiding light.
