Initial Competency Assessment

The Initial Competency Assessment is required for RBT certification and must be completed after finishing the 40-hour training.

  • It is the RBT applicant鈥檚 responsibility to locate a qualified assessor.
  • The assessor must be a BCBA or BCaBA.
  • USF faculty do not conduct competency assessments and do not assist with locating an assessor.
  • Per BACB requirements, the assessor must be employed by the same organization as the RBT applicant (see BACB Newsletter, September 2023, p. 4).
If You Are Not Currently Employed by an ABA Agency

Because the assessor must work for the same organization as you, individuals who are not yet employed by an ABA agency will need to:

  • Search for RBT positions in their local area.
  • Contact hiring agencies directly.
  • Confirm that the agency hires individuals who are completing or have completed the 40-hour RBT training and can provide the required competency assessment.
