Transition
Becoming Your Student's Coach
College is a period of transition filled with increased independence and personal responsibility. Families continue to play a meaningful role, but that role often shifts as students take greater ownership of their decisions and experiences.
Encouraging Independence through your new role
As your student begins their time at USF, they are continuing their transition into adulthood. While they will continue to share successes and challenges with you, they are now learning to take greater ownership of decisions, responsibilities, and problem-solving.
At USF, we prioritize:
- Building independence and confidence
- Developing resilience and accountability
- Navigating challenges responsibly
- Taking advantage of meaningful opportunities
- Thriving academically and personally
Your role doesn’t disappear — it evolves.
Evolving from advocate to coach
Supporting a college student often means shifting from managing situations to guiding conversations.
Instead of stepping in immediately, families should:
- Ask questions that encourage reflection
- Guide students toward campus resources
- Reinforce follow-through and responsibility
- Offer perspective without taking control
This transition can bring pride, excitement, and sometimes uncertainty. These feelings are normal. Growth often requires space!
Supporting Independence at Every Turn
Each year of college looks different. The kind of support your student needs during their first semester may shift as they move toward internships, leadership roles, or graduation planning.
You remain a key part of your student’s support system. As responsibilities increase, your guidance continues to matter — even as the way you provide that support changes.
We encourage you to explore campus resources as tools to reinforce independence, accountability, and well-being throughout your student’s journey at USF!
